After a 2-year hiatus, the Superior Curling Club held their 3rd annual mixed doubles club championship on March 27th. 17 teams competed for the coveted title of club champion. The field included 2018 champions Michael and Mona O’Brien, and 2019 champions Scott Laven and Lorraine Lisdahl. The competition was open to any club member male/female pair. All leagues, including the Sunday beginner league, were represented in the competition.
17 teams made for a unique draw and plenty of curling. Before each round of the playoffs, each team drew a card. Like cards competed against each other. Drawing a jack rewarded that team with a bye for that round. A team could receive a maximum of one bye.
The first round of competition saw a wide variety of teams advance, from 13-year-old Davin Britton and his 20-year-old sister Evaline to Lorraine Lisdahl (age not given) and Scott Laven. Also advancing were the husband/wife teams of Dale and Stacy Olson, Rick and Karen Flesvig, and Mike and Mona O’Brien. The team of Jeris Boyat and Jon Bell received the bye by virtue of drawing the jack. Jim Seitz and Deb Stein, led by the power of their voodoo doll, hexed their way into the second round. Rounding out the first-round winners were Joey Bonfoey and Carrie Rye, and Brian Bergquist and Kelly Maki.
The second round saw the defeat of both previous champions. Jim and Deb defeated the 2018 champions Mike and Mona, while Scott and Lorraine fell to Dale and Stacy. Also advancing to the third round where Brian and Kelly, and Rick and Karen. Joey and Carrie drew the jack to receive the bye.
The third round started with Dale and Stacy drawing the crucial bye card jack. Joey and Carrie defeated Rick and Karen in a battle that came down to the last rock, while the power of voodoo ran out for Jim and Deb as they fell to Brian and Kelly.
Because Brian and Kelly were the only team of the remaining 3 to have not drawn the jack, they received the bye to the final. Joey and Carrie defeated Dale and Stacy to earn a berth in the final.
After 7 hours of play, both teams were on their 4th draw of the day. Brian and Kelly emerged victorious with a steal of 1 point in the 6th end for an 8-6 victory.
Thank you to all participants, this was an amazing event!
